Written by Ashley Lyon, Journalist

Did you grow up on classic Dreamworks animated films, such as the movies of the Shrek franchise? Are you a fan of high school theatre who wants to support fellow classmates in their theatrical endeavors? Do you enjoy fairytale creatures and talking donkeys? Do you find puppeteering to be a fascinating craft? Do you like scrolling through Tumblr, looking at blogs and memes related to “Shrek is Love, Shrek is Life”? Do you often wish you could watch tap dancing rats? Have you ever wanted to watch student actors do an insane number of quick changes?

If you answered “yes” to one or more of the above questions, Shrek: The Musical — Pacific Grove High School’s 2018 Spring Musical — is for you. The show follows the well-known story of an ogre named Shrek as he attempts, with the help of a talking donkey, to rescue the Princess Fiona and gain his swamp back from the clutches of dictatorial Lord Farquaad. The musical, whose book and lyricsare written by A Devil Inside playwright David Lindsay-Abaire, sets the story of Shrek to catchy tunes by Jeanine Tesori, whose other notable works include Thoroughly Modern Millie and Fun Home. Whether or not you have seen the movie, Shrek: The Musical delights audiences with its witty humor, hummable anthems, such as “Story of My Life” and “Freak Flag”, and important themes of acceptance. As the story explains, “What makes us special makes us strong.”

Directed by Sean and Michelle Boulware, the musical features an extremely talented cast of students, including Isaiah Boulware as Shrek, Ashley Lyon as Princess Fiona, Elijah Taurke as Donkey, and Luke Herzog as Lord Farquaad. For seniors Ashley Lyon, Jordi Modisette (Pinocchio), Grace Woods (Sugar Plum Fairy/Gingy), Catherine Gruber (Mama Ogre, Wicked Witch), and Mei Bailey (Mama Bear), Shrek will be their final high school musical. The cast includes students from each class, as well as a handful of guest-starring eighth-grade students.

Shrek opens on Thursday April 19, with shows on 4/19, 4/20, 4/26, 4/27, and 4/28 at 7:00 p.m. and shows on 4/22 and 4/29 at 2:00 p.m. in the Student Union. Tickets can be purchased online through the linkbelow or at the door (if tickets are available). Don’t miss your chance to see the wonderful show and “let your freak flag fly.”
