December 20: A Grimm Publication

December 20, 1812 CE. “Grimm’s Fairy Tales” by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm is published. Mainly inspired by traditional Germanic folk stories, the first edition of “Grimm’s Fairy Tales” contained eighty-six stories, soon followed by the second 1815 edition of seventy stories. With its initial release into the European public, the Grimm brothers received much criticism, as their works were deemed unsuitable for its largely young audience. Throughout the rest of the 19th century, “Grimm’s Fairy Tales” would continue to be revised, eliminating many adult themes and references which characterized the original works. Despite the initial criticism of the Grimm Brothers’ works, their fairy tales would eventually become an integral part of Western culture.
