The Pacific Grove Girls’ Tennis Team season came to a close this past Thursday, November 2. The season concluded with two tough matches against opponents Santa Catalina and Stevenson, both of which ended in a 3-4 loss, followed by the MTAL tournament.

Charleen Hartmann, fourth singles, accounted for one of the wins in the match against Santa Catalina. Sofia Moore and Katie Hansen (second doubles) and Michelle and Elizabeth Lee (third doubles) pulled off wins in tiebreakers against Santa Catalina. Second and third doubles also won their matches against Stevenson. Becky Phillips and Caroline Coen (first doubles) played an intense match against Stevenson’s first doubles team, losing the first set, winning the second, and coming through with a win in the tiebreaker. Across the board, the girls’ tennis skills improved throughout the season with the help of Coaches Kathy Buller, Rick Kunnath, and John Rapp.

As Tianna Battistini, (second singles-regular season, second doubles-MTALs) told the NewsBreaker about the end of her season, “I felt pretty good about the match against Stevenson. The tournament was a good experience.” Pacific Grove sent six representatives to MTALs on Wednesday, November 1st, two singles and two doubles teams. Gaby Giraldo and Yuri Suzuki played singles for PG while teams Becky Phillips and Caroline Coen and Sofia Moore and Tianna Battistini played doubles. In Round One, Moore and Battistini defeated Oakwood, advancing to a Round Two match against Stevenson. Meanwhile, Phillips and Coen, ranked number two doubles team in the league, had a bye. Moore and Battistini continued onward to beat Stevenson as well, securing a place in the semifinals. In Round Two, Phillips and Coen played Santa Catalina’s second doubles team, winning in a tiebreaker. Both Pacific Grove doubles teams returned the next day, November 2nd, to play in the semifinals. Phillips and Coen faced Carmel’s first doubles team, losing in a tiebreaker. Meanwhile, Moore and Battistini faced and lost to the number one ranked doubles team in the league: Santa Catalina’s first doubles. As both PG teams lost, they now were faced with their most difficult challenge yet: playing their own teammates and friends for third place. After a very competitive match of three sets, Phillips and Coen ultimately took third place in the league. As Phillips said when asked how she felt about the tournament, “I felt really happy with it…I have never gotten that far before.” Overall, the girls’ tennis team definitely represented Pacific Grove very well in the tournament and ended their season with a slam.
