R.O.B.O.T.: Relief Of Boredom Of Teenagers

The PGHS Robotics Team is an after-school congregation of programmers, engineers, designers and budding business people. The team functions as a commune: everyone contributes to the final product. Each season, the group constructs a robot designed for a specific type of competition. “At the competition, we interact and communicate with other FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) Robotics Teams and work together in temporary alliances that are randomly generated at the event,” explains Zeus Marquez, a third year roboticist and a junior at PGHS. The competitions, similar to the team itself, are built upon cooperation and teamwork.

Vanessa Barragán, a first year roboticist and junior at PGHS adds, “There is plenty of different kinds of work to be done, including things like marketing. So anyone looking to join doesn’t have to worry about computer experience.” As the team is built upon collaboration, any person who wants to may join and will be welcomed onto the team.

“Even if you don’t have much experience, a willingness to learn and a passion for STEM will make robotics an enjoyable experience,” encourages Tyler Smithtro, a first year roboticist and freshman.

To illustrate Smithtro’s point, Marquez explains “Personally, I had little to no experience when I first joined the team in my Freshman year; I was merely interested in the idea of robotics and its potential.” Marquez also elucidates the importance of having experience with engineering, saying “… the club has allowed me to learn so much more in terms of computer science and building and teamwork that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.”

The Robotics Club offers an experience of a lifetime to learn essential engineering skills while building teamwork and friendship, and recently came in 2nd at the CalGames tournament, a competition where, last year, they came in 26th.
