Varsity Football unable to maintain lead in Homecoming Game

Stevenson – Coming off of a win against Marina last week, the Breakers Varsity Football team lose a two touchdown lead against their Pebble Beach rivals, the Stevenson Pirates, for a disappointing Homecoming Game.

The Breakers had high hopes for the Stevenson game, especially considering last year’s team won and this year’s Junior Varsity team managed a stunning comeback late in the fourth quarter to win 29 to 28. The game certainly started in PG’s favor, with a passing touchdown from Noah Cryns to Nick Coppla with 8:33 left in the first quarter.

A rushing TD early in the second quarter expanded the Breakers’ lead to two touchdowns against Stevenson, and already the Breakers looked better than last year. The Breakers were even successful on the defensive front, highlighted by an interception from Coppla with 8:01 left in the half. Stevenson would, however, get a touchdown late in the first half to go into halftime with the score 14 to 6.

The score would stay in the Breakers’ favor for quite a while, almost the entirety of the third quarter, until Stevenson closed the gap between the Breakers with another touchdown.

Ultimately, the Breakers lost the game in the fourth quarter, when they conceded two touchdowns to Stevenson; both having two point conversions to put further insult to injury. A string of poorly executed plays forced the Breakers to lose the Homecoming Game after leading for the majority of the game.

The Varsity Football team hopes to rebound from the loss in next week’s away game (2 – 3 / 1 – 1 MTAL). The Breakers play Gonzales next week on Friday October 7.
