PACIFIC GROVE — It was a tale of two halves tonight as the Breakers came from behind to beat the pesky Wildcatz from Watsonville in the first football game of the 2015 season.

A couple of quick scores after halftime drove the Breakers to victory. Watsonville simply had no answer for the methodical Breaker offense, and they were beaten down by the Breaker offensive front.

The first half inspired some anxiety in the stands when the Breakers trailed 14-13 in a game many in attendance expected to not be close, but the players remained calm and shut down their opponents for the victory.

It looked like Pacific Grove might put the game out of reach early after Noah Cryns took a fourth-down swing pass down the left sideline for a 47-yard touchdown pass, and the sentiment grew when Sam Fenstermaker recovered an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff.

Unfortunately for the Breakers, any hope of scoring vanished when the Wildcatz recovered a Nick Coppla fumble inside the red zone.

Coppla made up for his earlier mistake in the second quarter, when he took an end around 19 yards down the left side for a touchdown and a 13-0 Breaker lead.

Two Watsonville touchdowns, a fifty-yard pass and a one-yard run, in the span of four minutes shocked the P.G. faithful and put the Breakers in a 14-13 halftime deficit.

In the second half Pacific Grove seemed to find their groove, allowing for a ground attack offense that wore down the Watsonville defense and ate up valuable time off the clock.

Alas, in a game of run-first offense, the turning point came when the Breakers pulled off a jet sweep pass in the third quarter that broke open the Wildcatz’s secondary. Quarterback Colton Moore handed the ball to Nick Coppla, who promptly threw a surprise touchdown pass to Kane Miller. A Wildcatz field goal made it 27-17 going into the fourth quarter.

Watsonville had a chance to make a comeback late in the fourth quarter, but a costly chop block penalty nullified a Wildcatz touchdown pass that would have closed the gap between the two teams to only four points. A Kolby Foster interception in the end zone sealed the victory for the Breakers, who get their first win of the new season.

Pacific Grove moves to 1-0(0-0 MTAL) and will have a bye week before facing off against Fremont of Sunnyvale on September 18th at Breaker Stadium.
