On Friday night, Pacific Grove will begin its quest for the CCS Division IV Football Championship.

As the No. 2 seed in the bracket, Pacific Grove will play the 7th-seeded team, San Lorenzo Valley. P.G. is the high seed, so the game will be played at home.

The Cougars(8-2, 4-1 SCCAL) are making their first appearance in the CCS Playoffs since the 2010/11 season. The runners-up in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League this season, S.L.V. improved from a 1-9 season the year before.

The Cougars’ two losses came at the hands of Mills and Aptos. P.G. and S.L.V. had two opponents in common this year, Marina and Watsonville. Both teams defeated Marina handily. The two teams defeated the Mariners by a combined score of 92-8. The Cougars beat Watsonville 27-21; the Breakers defeated the Wildcatz 39-16.

SLV’s offense is led by senior running back Nate Gentry, who led the SCCAL in rushing with 973 yards and 13 touchdowns. Junior Brighton Hart added nine rushing touchdowns on the year. Quarterback Isaac Newberry, a senior, leads the team with 1559 passing yards and 18 touchdown passes.

Lineman Tommy Fitzgerald leads the S.L.V. defense with 41 tackles and 11 sacks. The defense has allowed an average of 17 points per game.
